My Placement Year at Heppenstalls Solicitors

Looking back on my placement year at Heppenstalls Solicitors, I can honestly say it has been one of the most valuable and rewarding parts of my journey into law. I expected to gain practical legal experience, but I did not expect to become part of such a supportive and welcoming team.

One of the first things that stood out to me was how approachable everyone was. Starting a placement in a professional legal environment can feel daunting, especially for the first time, but the entire team at Heppenstalls immediately put me at ease. There was never any expectation that I should know everything, and I quickly learned that questions were welcomed, not judged.

That made a huge difference to my confidence. Whenever I was unsure about a task, needed clarification on a legal process, or wanted to understand why something was done in a particular way, someone was always willing to help. I never felt embarrassed about making mistakes because the focus was always on learning and improving. Some of my most valuable lessons came from asking questions and receiving constructive guidance. It created an environment where I could challenge myself without feeling I had to get everything right the first time.

Before starting work, placement students complete a series of online training modules on the firm’s procedures, compliance requirements, and security protocols. These gave me a useful introduction to the firm and made the transition into legal practice much easier, especially for students with little or no prior legal experience.

During the first half of my placement, I worked in the Private Client department. I was given responsibilities similar to those of a legal assistant and quickly became involved in a range of tasks. Jesamine took the time to show me how to use the firm’s case management system and explain how matters were handled. I was trusted to work independently, while knowing support was always available when I needed it.

Many of my daily tasks came through a dictation system, which allowed me to complete work at my own pace while building confidence and familiarity with legal documents. I drafted attendance notes, wills, and correspondence, as well as carrying out administrative tasks such as scanning and filing. As my confidence grew, I was also given opportunities to assist with broader matters, including probate work and liaising with estate agents.

What I appreciated most was the balance between independence and support. I was trusted to take responsibility for my work, but I also knew that if I made a mistake or felt unsure, I could ask for help without feeling judged. The feedback I received was always constructive and helped turn every task into a learning opportunity.

The second half of my placement was in the Conveyancing department, where I worked on the firm’s Deeds Project. This involved reviewing and organising historic and current property deeds held by the firm. Supported by Anastasia, Head of Property, I learned how to assess deeds, decide what action was needed, and communicate with property owners about documents held in safe storage.

Over time, I became more confident managing the project independently. It was satisfying to see the progress being made and to know I was contributing to an important piece of work for the firm. The project strengthened my organisational skills and attention to detail, while also reinforcing the value of having experienced colleagues available for guidance when needed.

What truly made my placement at Heppenstalls special, however, was the people. Everyone was friendly, approachable, and genuinely invested in helping us succeed. As a final-year law student, there were naturally times when university commitments became demanding, particularly during assessments and exams. Heppenstalls was always understanding and supportive. If I needed flexibility around my studies or could not attend because of academic commitments, I never felt any pressure. Instead, I felt that my education was valued alongside my professional development.

By the end of the year, Heppenstalls felt like much more than a placement provider. I genuinely felt part of a family. The encouragement, patience, and kindness shown by everyone made it a place where I looked forward to coming to work and felt comfortable being myself.

For anyone considering a placement year, I would highly recommend Heppenstalls. It offers excellent practical legal experience across multiple departments, as well as something just as important: a supportive environment where you are encouraged to learn, ask questions, make mistakes, and grow. The experience strengthened my legal knowledge, improved my confidence, and gave me real insight into life within a law firm. Most importantly, it confirmed why I want to pursue a career in law.
